Position Title: Program Lead - Technical Safety

Job Summary:

The Technical Program Lead is responsible for providing expertise and programs to deliver continual improvement in technical safety matters. This shall include programs inclusive of both Machine and Process Safety.  The lead shall develop, deliver and track program progress, taking actions as needed to ensure successful preventative and protective incident methodologies for sustained improvement.  They shall act as a Subject Matter Expert to the organization, regions, project teams and functions as required.   The Lead shall support building capability in core technical safety programs for operation discipline.  


The Program Lead shall interface with other key functions to advance overall technical safety, such as engineering and technical services. They shall develop and deliver against a strategy for continual improvement and a drive to ZERO technical safety incidents in both machine and process.  Participate and provide support for Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Actions leading from any safety technical safety incidents.


The preferred candidate should have knowledge and experience in building strategic plans and driving improvement in machine and process safety. They shall be able to work with all regions within McCain, capable in engaging with safety, technical and management teams to lead program solutions and build alignment. 




  • Act as Global Technical Safety leader.  Develop strategy to drive to ZERO personal safety incidents and zero severity incidents.  Assess and develop any corrective actions to deliver on program effectiveness. KPI's impacted - Incident and Severity Reduction.
  • Develop and deliver H&S capability training programs for regional and site leaders  KPI's impacted -  Personnel Development - Training.
  • Act as a coach to leaders in specifics of Technical Safety Programs and requirements to drive incident reduction. KPI's impacted - Safety Policy Adherence, Incident Rate.
  • Work with Regional and Functional teams to support development and updates to Policy as needed resulting from technical safety improvements. KPIs impacted - Incident and Severity reduction.
  • Collect, report and support data analysis of safety metrics to meet regional and global requirements. KPIs impacted - Compliance.




Winning with customers and consumers: The position is internally focused to support the Business Values and Priorities, through development and delivery of safety programs for our colleagues, and reporting compliance.

Driving quality and innovation: Provides materials and capability programs to drive improvements in safety knowledge and policy adherence. Supports regional HSE and Leadership to deliver training materials to decrease overall risk profile.  This shall include identification of highest risk items and development of plan to address gaps. Person shall be able to analyze trends and make recommendations for improvement to LT for ongoing improvement. 

This person should be able to analyze and make recommendations for process simplification to HSE leadership team.  As needed, modifications shall be implemented and tracked to completion.  This shall include both regional and global systems as appropriate.

Creating enablers to fuel investment: The position focusses on loss prevention and compliance, related to minimizing operational costs and increasing productivity and efficiency.  Through support of regional HSE business leads, this role will help provide data collection and analysis to permit more efficient management of HSE workload. In terms of continuous improvement, drive HSE capability improvement to meet needs of Safety Transformation, and initiatives such as IL6S/TPM, incident reduction, RCA and others as required.
Growing together: This position is responsible for development and implementation of core HSE programs for HSE personnel and affected colleagues.

Freedom to act: There is a lot of autonomy in this role and the expectation is for the person to work independently with some guidance. The Individual must have ability to evaluate, develop and deliver capability program.  Strong knowledge in McCain and regulatory policies required, as well as ability to influence others. 


Work relationships:

The position is required to work with Regional, Global and Plant HSE, Site operations and others as required to collect data, provide analysis, develop and deliver HSE programs. The position interfaces with a number of other functions including Engineering, Human Resources, Legal and Corporate Functional leaders.  Able to manage to a budget.


This successful candidate should be able to recommend and deliver programs to help drive improvements in overall safety performance and reduction of incident rate.



The minimum requirement is a Bachelor's degree in H&S or other related function (engineering, quality, training coordinator, analyst, etc.) with minimum direct experience in safety of 5-7 years. 

The position requires as a minimum 4-5 years of  H&S experience as well as some experience operating at regional or corporate level.  

A wide range of inter-personal skills are required for the role. This includes leadership, coaching and persuasion to follow a certain course, technical guidance on specific health & safety issues and managerial and presentation skills.
