Position Title: Waste Treatment Operator-1

Job Summary

Operate wastewater treatment equipment, sludge processing, and disposal equipment in the wastewater treatment plant to control flow and processing of process wastewater by performing the following duties.

 

Job Functions

 

Essential Functions:

  • Monitor control panels and adjusts valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow of wastewater.
  • Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and tests results to determine load requirements.
  • Starts and stops pumps to control flow of wastewater through screening and clarification processes.
  • Maintains log of operations and records meter and gauge readings.
  • Collects wastewater, sludge and scum samples and conducts laboratory tests.
  • Performs routine maintenance of wastewater treatment plant equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of necessary materials and parts to ensure ongoing treatment plant operation.
  • Other routine maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Strictly adheres to all company and plant policies concerning safety, performing proper Lock-Out, Tag-Out procedures, using proper lifting techniques, wearing effectively all personal protective equipment (PPE) as required, proper walking/stepping and all other safety procedure related to your duties.
  • Adhere to all company and plant polices related to GMP’s.
  • Adhere to all company and plant policies, work rules and procedures.

 

Other Job Duties:

  • Supervises contractor responsible for hauling and disposal of the scum (waste oil) and sludge.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  1. Mental
  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

 

 

  1. Skill and Knowledge
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Must be certifiable as a wastewater treatment plant operator (class two) after two years on the job.
  • Must complete training in confined space entry, forklift operation and hazardous materials technician.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand.
  • Frequent reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing.
  • The employee is continuously required to walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to climb a ladder at least 18 feet off the ground and be able to descend through a manhole at least 15 feet below ground.
